We hope that you will enjoy listening to the Berlin nightingale recordings tagged on the map.
The aim of this project is to raise awareness of the nightingales in Berlin and to encourage Berlin residents and visitors to listen to their wonderful songs. The bird song recordings on this website were all made with smart phones – on some you can even hear the other Berlin sounds in the background! In the future we would like to invite you to get involved and to add your own nightingale recordings.
In Berlin, every spring (April to June) the nightingales take over: males sing night after night in parks, along railway stretches and streets, no green spot seems too small to be claimed by a songster. The nightingale song is not only the special spring treat for the ears of many Berliners, but has also been the subjects of scientific research for many years. Biologists study the song, the mating success, and the breeding of about 30 nightingales each year. But the overall population in Berlin is about 3000! Or even more?
We will develop an app for Nightingale City Berlin and we will extend the participation to Berliner citizen scientists to record the bird songs and also analyze the songs on-line. All this knowledge sitting in the trees, singing, and being admired which could be studied with a little help of the Berliners and their smart phones. A few moments recording with a smartphone, geo-tag and then upload to the website would increase the Berlin nightingale-knowledge … Stay tuned!
Please get in touch with us if you like the website or if you would like to be involved with the Nightingale City Berlin project in the future.
